How to Administer Intranasal Midazolam

A few weeks ago, we discussed the use of intranasal midazolam for at-home seizure cessation. I mentioned that sending home midazolam in a syringe is not a good choice due to its tendency to be absorbed by plastic and light. Many folks, rightly so, wrote back and asked the very reasonable question.. “okay, how do you send it home, then??”

The Midazolam Packet – all of this is in one, preferably light impermeable, bag

1.      One vial or bottle of midazolam with UP TO 3 doses for the pet

2.      Two syringes

3.      Either a needle to dose the medication, or an oral syringe adapter plug (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XKD2VW9?psc=1&ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_ct_C6W4R279VVTDCY4A9SHP) Note: I do not get any financial benefit from recommending this product

4.      Two nasal atomizers for administration to the pet (see picture above)

The plan is that the owners will draw up the dose, use an atomizer to administer it to the pet, and then flush the nasal atomizer and syringe with plain tap water. Eventually the atomizer will clog and when it does so they should dispose of it and begin using the second atomizer. I advise owners to call you (their vet) to get the next atomizer ordered so that they always have 2 in their possession. Using an adaptor plug is an easy way to avoid dispensing needles for this controlled drug!
